Who and What are Baby Boomers?

Well the term "Baby Boom' I soften used when there is an unusual spike in the birth rate.  In the United States primarily, following World War 2, there was a large spike in births.  Other nations that experienced this same trend were Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.  The Baby Boomer age, as accepted by most, began in 1946 and ended in 1964.  Depending on whom you speak with, you may get a variance on those years, but that is the most commonly accepted range.  Many feel that this span of years (19), may be too many for a generation.  However during this time period, especially in the beginning of the 'Boom', there was a dramatic spike in births.  Often recognized as the first US citizen born into the Baby boomer age, was Kathleen Casey-Kirschling.  Kathleen was born January 1, 1946 at 12:00:01 AM, and on October 15, 2007 Kathleen applied for Social Security benefits.  This is expected to be the beginning of the Baby Boomer retirement age.  However, retirement in today's world may have a drastically different meaning.  In the past retirement may have meant that your work life would end, you may play golf, fish, sew, or read a book every day as you watch the sun rise over a beach.  But many have changed this period of their life as a "New Beginning".  With the average life expectancy now over 75 years old, many see this as a new opportunity.  Once hitting retirement, it is often thought that this is the time to RELAX.  There could now be new definitions as to what RELAX means.  Many retirees are starting a second life with new jobs, maybe more geared towards their real interests, not what puts food on the table.  Others pick up side work just to have the extras in life.  Yet there are still the true retirees who move to the warm cities, retirement  communities, or spend the time traveling.  Many communities have popped up across the nation specifically geared towards servicing this age group.  Offering golf courses, local community centers, day trips, and medical services.  Then there are the retirees that move out and travel the road.  An industry that has gained huge appeal through recent years is RV's (recreational vehicles).  Also known as campers.  They range in style from the pull behind pop-up camper to the custom, multi-million dollar bus.  There are also communities popping up geared solely to having a mobile home.  Say for instance you had one of these large buses, you can either buy a lot in one of these communities and set up camp.  Many of these communities offer all the amenities, from being close to popular resort areas to creating their own resort type atmosphere offering on grounds fishing, golf, as well as being able to be close to others in your age group, with similar interests.  Then you have the people that enjoy seeing new things.  There are RV parks in every state of the union, and being so gives the RV'er the opportunity to roam around experiencing new things, National Parks, Beach Resorts, Golf Courses, and of course car racing!  Another extreme Boomer escape is yachting.  Like RV'ing, yachting has many advantages and has a very dedicated group of followers.  A yacht was originally described as a 'small boat', however in today's terms, a yacht is known to most a large, expensive, boat.  A yacht can either be wind powered, via a sail, or be a power boat or cruising vessel.  The advantages of a yacht are almost endless.  While an RV would let the traveler reach their destination, they are limited by roads.  Being that our Earth is about 71% covered in water, your destinations are endless!  A yacht is basically a floating home, that goes where you want, often in luxury.  You could spend your 'new life' traveling the seas!  If these options are a little too extravagant, or you would still like to keep your roots planted somewhere, there are still the normal methods of travel.  Travel by plane, group bus trips or train rides make for a unique way to see sites and meet new people, while even just going for a walk in your own neighborhood can open your eyes.  In the rush of today's world, many of us let things just pass us by, maybe rushing to get through the day.  While travel is often seen as relaxing and a way to spend your time.  Now that many will have much more time on their hands, many start taking more interest in lost hobbies or even creating a new one.  Photography is a good way to open new doors, and is an easy way to get that instant satisfaction.  Today's world of digital photography has drastically improved how pictures are taken, developed, and even viewed.  There is the obvious like playing golf, fishing, day trips, sewing, sitting in the shade reading a book, playing with the kids or grandkids, or just RELAXING!  In any event, your retirement is 'your retirement', produced from your imagination and put life with all your free time!
There is much to talk about, pertaining to Baby Boomers, so please continue through the site to learn more!  We are going to be constantly evolving this website, hopefully soon to include a forum where everyone can meet and discuss similar interests.  If there are topics you wish to be covered, items you would like to see featured, please write in!  We are gearing this site to help you!  So we definitely appreciate your input!
